Thousands Displaced in Kuria Conflict |

The number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) following the clan conflict in Kuria East District in Nyanza Province now stands at 7,045 people, who are receiving humanitarian assistance from the Kenya Red Cross. The most vulnerable people are 854 (565 in Kegonga and 289 in Ntimaru), most of them staying in temporary shelter in churches and chiefs’ camps. The total amount of relief food dispatched from the KRCS headquarters in Nairobi is 24MT (20MT of maize flour and 4MT of cooking oil). By 16th June 2009, the amount of relief food distributed was 21.029MT (17.506MT maize flour and 3.522MT oil vegetable). The worst affected are Wagirabosi/Targai Location in Ntimaru Division mainly inhabited by Buirege clan, and Girigiri Sub-location in Kegonga Division mainly inhabited by Nyabasi clan. The IDPs are camping at Kebaroti Catholic Church, Nguruna Catholic Church, Kegonga Catholic Church, Girigiri Primary School and Kemutobo Royal Church.
