 Tackling Malnutrition Conditions through Nutritional Programme 

 Halima Adhan was a happy woman on the day of this interview as her four year-old son, Aftin Mohammed  had recovered from oedema after being enrolled for five weeks into the Outpatient Therapeutic Programme (OTP). 
Halima could not help but be grateful for the improvement she had seen in her son. 

 

A bit of Normalcy in Moyale amidst Suspicions

The situation in Moyale is slowly getting back to normal, contrary to what it was when a team from Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), led by the Secretary General Abbas Gullet, visited the town and its environs on Saturday 28th January 2012. However, suspicion between the Gabra and the Borana communities, who had been engaged in a fierce fight for a week-long is still very evident.


Moyale conflict heightens as elders call for peace

“ We want peace,” that was the message from both the Borana and Garba elders when the Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) team from the Eastern Region,  KRCS Moyale Branch and the Headquarters in Nairobi, led by the KRCS Secretary General, Abbas Gullet, toured the area for assessment of the impact of the conflict and a reconciliatory message for both the Gabra and the Borana elders.


The Dadaab Operation Escalates

Kenyans for Kenya: Malnutrition rates in Turkana drops to 13.7 %

Some 2000 metric tonnes of Unimix imported from S. Africa, is currently being distributed to schools under the school feeding programme Malnutrition rates in Turkana have dropped to 13.7 per cent from 37.4 per cent as a result of direct intervention by the Kenyans for Kenya Initiative, the Initiative’s steering committee has announced.


Protecting young lives and making a change

When Turkana County made it in the news in July because of the drought in the region, many Kenyans came together to raise monies to feed their starving brothers and prevent loss of lives as it was initially reported that some residents were on the verge of succumbing to the effects of the drought. 


KRCS Scales Up Health Services in Dadaab

The IFO2 West Refugee camp is made up of 9 sections, which have 66 blocks, with 10,886 residential blocks. Currently, KRCS is providing treatment, nutritional screening and counseling, therapeutic feeding at the refugee camp.



Farmers reap rewards

KRCS Secretary General, Abbas Gullet, on Wednesday January 11, 2012, distributed 24 irrigation pumps, each with a capacity of irrigating 180 acres to 24 farming groups at phase 2 of the Tana River Drought Recovery Project in Madogo to bolster food insecurity.

More than 40 patients have so far received free reconstructive surgery services in an ongoing philanthropic exercise through a partnership of Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS), the PeadroCavadas Foundation of Valencia, Spain and the Ministry of Medical Services through the Isiolo District Hospital staff.

Cassava Seedlings For Farmers In Yatta

As part of a long term intervention measure against drought, the Kenya Red Cross Society has partnered with Kenya Agricultural Institute to provide cassava seeds to 5000 families in Yatta.The plant is drought resistant and provides the much needed starch in kenya.


KRCS Awarded For Attaining MDGs

The Kenya Red Cross Society (KRCS) received three Millennium Development (MDGs) Awards on Friday 21st October 2011 from the MDGs Goals Trust Fund, for helping in attaining the Millennium Development Goals.

 

KRCS Operates in Dadaab Refugee Camps

KRCS Presses for Endorsement of a Comprehensive Framework on Road Safety

The Kenya Red Cross Society made a strong pitch for the endorsement of a comprehensive framework on road safety at the RCRC General Assembly’s Road Safety Workshop on November 24, 2011 in Geneva.

 


The Kenya Red Cross Organisational Development (OD) Department, held a workshop last month with ten KRCS branches to review the progress of the Twinning Programme.Twinning Cooperation is a long term partnership between a KRCS Branch and a Red Cross/Red Crescent Branch and/or a unit of a sister Society.


Training Courses 

The training unit aims at building both internal and external capacity for effective programme and emergency management.The unit worked closely with programmes and partners in facilitation of courses, development of course materials, training of trainers and accreditation of courses. Operational Research process in Pastoralist Education was started in North Eastern Region.
In 2012 focus will be to develop online courses for enhanced flexibility and accessibility as well as facilitate Trainer for Trainer Courses for a cascading effect to staff, volunteers and clients.
